When I first wrote about taking a radical step a few weeks ago, I had no idea what that would spark in me. It’s been an amazingly productive few weeks of creative output, facing down fears, and renewed energy. The fears part – they were little fears really – more like discomforts – they weren’t really getting in the way of anything big. At least that’s what I was telling myself. Until I became aware of how clever I was at steering around those little fears and discomforts. Beware of the little things. Big things force you to deal with them. It’s the little things that trip you up and keep you from flying.
Radical steps. Walking through the fear and getting to the other side. Acknowledging a discomfort and doing it anyway. It all came down to remembering who I am, why I’m here, what my gifts are, what people thank me for, the service I offer – and then getting on with doing it.
And it’s been about remembering to choose love. Ah, there’s the crux of it. At the most fundamental level, there are only two emotions: love and fear. It’s easy to take the love for granted and to give the fear way too much attention. I recently heard someone say, “Fear is overrated.” I would add that love is underrated! When I recognize that fear has become my dominant gut feeling, it has finally become my automatic response to choose love instead.
Just choose love. You don’t have to know how to do it. There is no instruction book or right or wrong way. Just choose love. Believe me, it makes a difference. As soon as I choose love, all of those little niggly fears lose their hold on me. They become totally inconsequential. They just evaporate. Gone. Done. Liberation. I can fly again.
Among the books I read this summer was Danielle LaPorte’s The Fire Starter Sessions. Wonderful book. Great, practical, “here’s what it means in your life” wisdom. Her style is sharp, punchy, to the point, real, and just irreverent enough to make the read easy and the wisdom sink in. Her work is very much in alignment with who we are and what we do here at the Center For Transformational Presence.
The book’s closing words say it all to me:
You are writing the movie script of your life.
Desire. Lights. Action! (Some tears.)
You’re a hero on an adventure.
This is it. This is the adventure.
Creativity. Change. Livelihood. Art. People. Leadership. Legacy.
Score. Money. Gain. Failure. Pride. Industry. Simple. Love.
LOVE.
Oh, love.
It’s all about love in the end.
And in the beginning.
So start now, today, here.
Let it be simple, easy, electric.
Be surprised, be new, be true, be you.
Now.
Love. It might be a radical step.
Be you. That might also be a radical step.
These words of Saint Thomas sum it all up:
If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you.
If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.
There it is. What more is there to say? Bring forth what is within you. It will save you, and it just might help save the world.
